"Barnaby Baxter got into a fair number of scrapes. However, most of them were either of Mr. O'Malley's making or resulted in embarrassment of some sort for the rather clumsy fairy godfather" (from wiki).
After Barnaby's dreadful performance today, the question is, who is Mr O'Malley and who is the fairy godfather, and is the "scrap metal" a metaphor? Hits: 198 Trackback(0)

Can anyone tell me what Barnaby's dreadful performance was? I have known of a few prior dreadful performances but can't find much online about the recent one.

Thank you Tom. I think that this will count as one of Abbott's worst decisions, to put Barnaby up against such an efficient performer as Tanner. IMO Barnaby should have been left as a wildcard but maybe Abbott thought that Barnaby might do more harm than good unless put on a short leash via a portfolio.

Tom, Australia's foreign aid is woeful compared with other countries. Plus we lack the philanthopists such as in the US, notable standout being Dick Smith. We have a few well regarded people prepared who think not of national borders but of the welfare of all, the Rev Tim Costello comes to mind. Otherwise, Australia's effort is minimal at best.

That's what happens when you carve up all your arable land for housing developments, you have to then start importing food which adds substantially to the cost in the average person's shopping trolley. And Australia is the best (aka worst) example of this as we have so little land suitable for growing staple food crops. 6

That may have some influence Min, although I heard somewhere (if I find thetime, I'll look it uP) that Australia currently has the capacity to grow almost twice as much food as we require (numbers are quite fuzzy too lol)

Tom, agreed especially with regard to Coles and Woolies. On the hills around there are macadamias, bananas and avocados yet my mum down in Hawthorn has to pay $4.00 for one single avocado.
A scenic tour around your local Coles or Woolies will reveal Imported from... 8

Jane, had an accountant like that a couple of years ago. Stuffed up our tax and then tried to charge us an extra $125.00 due to his stuff up.

A double dip rececession anyone? Abbott is a self-confessed economics nuff-nuff and so it seems that it will be left to Joe Hockey to carry the Coalition's economics policies.
Just thinking, Abbott isn't into economics, Abbott isn't into environmental issues..obviously shown no interest whatsoever in the military. So what exactly is it that Abbott does apart from jogging in finch smugglers and wearing lycra? 14

Jane, I think that people should think carefully about considering Abbott as a future PM. And I wouldn't have said the same about Nelson, Turnbull or even Hockey. Abbott has some fairly inappropriate attitudes which makes one think that it would be a toss up about who he would support - The Pope in Rome or the Australian people. Abbott's strict Catholicism could have implications re separation of church and state.

Barnaby seems to emulate that other Joyce with a spot of stream of consciousness falling out of his mouth.

Jane the consensus seems to be that Abbott will hold the fort and minimise the Coalition's losses so that they can have a fighting chance at the following election. Whether Abbott heads this post-election team is another story entirely..just a guess, it will be Hockey.

I think that depends on the severity of the loss Min. If they lose a lot of seats and don't manage to hold the fort then Abbott will be roadkill as he said, on the other hand if they do manage to minimise the loss then I'm sure Abbott will lead onto the election after that.

At least Abbott knows what he wants to do: Return the Nation to John Howard's version of the 1950's.
Hockey wouldn't have a clue what he'd do, except (perhaps) to wolf-down a few more sausage-rolls while waiting for somnething like an idea to enter his head. So far as the Libs are concerned, it's the Devil they know spouting what they regard as the tried-and-true the Howard Formula (even though that formula was soundly rejected by the electorate in 2007), as opposed to the Devil they don't trust. You never know, Hockey might turn-out to be be a Wet, or at least mildly Moist. And that would never do (at least according to Minchin and the rest of the Uglies currently running the show). So far as the electorate is concerned, they couldn't give a toss who's leading the disorganised and self-contradictory rabble. Despite a couple of rogue Newspolls, Labour is clearly in the box-seat to hand the Libs their arses on a plate at the next Federal election. The only question is: How many Colaition seats are going to fall? 22

Re the Howard-formula..amazing how quickly he disappeared, but maybe he was always just fluff and feathers. And speaking of fluff and feathers..Hockey is well, well what is Hockey? Apart from looking cute in shrek ears and saying I'll save ya Fiona and more recently in a tiara and ballet skirt (why? I don't know). 23

Here's a different slant on why the Mad Abbott might have done it ... The appointment of Joyce as finance spokesman was a bizarre call by the Liberal leader. It's certainly a thought Caney. A smack on the wrist for Hockey being a naughty boy for 1. supporting Turnbull on the ETS issue 2. then running against both Abbott and Turnbull. Then throw into the mix a media tart such as Barnaby. Hockey surely must have had to do some substantial swallowing of pride to maintain a front bench possie with Abbott as leader and Joyce taking away the headlines from him.
